Mozart Marriage of Figaro
Beethoven Violin Concerto
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5
Shhhhhhh! Grandmasters at work
Overture to The Marriage of Figaro
This lively and genial overture to the Marriage of Figaro stands on its own as a concert piece. Composed in 1786, the opera was considered to be a bit edgy because of its satirical take on the amorous affairs of the aristocracy. It was a hit from its very first performance and both the opera and its overture remain among Mozart’s most popular works.
The Beethoven Violin Concerto
Unlike the Mozart opera, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto was a flop on its first performance. Revived by Felix Mendelssohn 17 years after Beethoven’s death, this magnificent concerto is now regarded as a masterwork and is a centerpiece of the violin repertoire. Joseph Scheer is an accomplished concertmaster and soloist who exhibits wit, imagination and technical brilliance in his interpretations of the grand masters.
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5
This symphony is one of the composer’s most popular works with the second movement in particular regarded as quintessential Tchaikovsky. Listen for the “motto” theme that appears in all four movements.
